This weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, and with it, peak strawberry season. It’s the time of year when my sweet tooth begins craving desserts that feel light, bright, and nostalgic. The kind of treats that taste like slow childhood summers, with memories tucked into every bite.
So when friends asked if I’d bake them a strawberry cake, I practically squealed with delight. I immediately ran to my cookbook collection in search of the perfect recipe, instinctively reaching for “Dorie’s Anytime Cakes.”
In true Dorie Greenspan fashion, this book of 100 cakes is as artful as the recipes themselves, filled with breathtaking illustrations of every recipe. When I flipped to page 92, I stopped in my tracks. The most exquisite hand-drawn Berry Yogurt Cake decorated the page — and I couldn’t wait to bring it to life.

Though the recipe invites you to choose whichever berries are in season (blueberries or raspberries would be equally divine), strawberries were essential. Not only because my friends had specifically requested them, but I had also just picked up the reddest, juiciest strawberries from my local farmers’ market for this exact reason.
The cake itself is a classic French yogurt cake, made with plain Greek yogurt and a neutral oil to create a tender, moist crumb. Infused with lemon zest for a bright, citrusy bite and strawberries that melt into the batter as it bakes. Altogether, it tastes like a mouthful of Midwest summer.
Finished with a delicate strawberry icing and topped with freshly chopped berries, the final cake was almost too pretty to slice into. Admittedly, as my own worst critic, I spent far too long fussing over the finishing touches. I repeatedly returned to zhuzh the icing or rearrange the strawberries trying to perfect every detail. But eventually, it all came together into something that felt truly special.
Taste wise, the end result was nothing short of heaven. Dorie’s recipe captures everything a summer dessert should be: bright, fresh, and bursting with fruit. It’s exactly the sort of dessert my momma would have loved!
As much as I’d love to share the full recipe right here, part of the magic is discovering it for yourself inside “Dorie’s Anytime Cakes.” Trust me, it’s worth making room for on your bookshelf.
