5 Reasons Your Mind, Body, & Skin Need a Digital Detox

We’ve talked about embracing a slow autumn with a morning routine, organization, and consistency, but what about a digital detox? Not just because it’s a trendy bandwagon to hop on (we’re not followers, after all), but because it can genuinely benefit your mind, body, and skin.

Beyond reclaiming your time, you’ll be surprised by the positive effects of stepping away from your devices. This “detox” doesn’t have to be extreme — it could mean going screen-free 30–60 minutes before bed, putting your phone away for a day or weekend, or deleting social media apps for a month to curb mindless scrolling. Whatever form it takes, commit to it and notice how it improves your daily life in the following ways.

Improves sleep

All your digital devices (phone, computer, tablet, TV, and more) emit blue light, or high-energy visible (HEV) light, which boosts alertness and reactivity. While helpful during the day, it can disrupt your sleep. Take blue light sources out of the picture and you’ll be better able to regulate your circadian rhythm.

Increases concentration, focus, & productivity

Constant notifications and distractions impair concentration and productivity while contributing to overall cognitive fatigue. Shut out the noise for even a short period of time to help your brain rest and reset for increased focus once you’re back online.

Promotes mindfulness

Taking time offline helps you refocus, recharge, and reduce the stress of being always connected while grounding you in the present moment. A short digital detox can restore balance and improve overall mental well-being.

Bolsters relationships

Putting your phone away gives you more time in your day to connect with friends and family in a more meaningful way. Instead of getting sucked down a TikTok rabbit hole or online shopping, prioritize quality time with those you love — even if it’s just to talk.

Gives your skin & eyes a break

Studies have revealed that blue light can actually accelerate visible skin aging, contribute to hyperpigmentation, and strain your eyes over time. While a digital detox won’t eliminate these risks for good, it can help offset daily exposure by giving your skin and eyes a rest.

TIP: Reduce blue light exposure by using Dark Mode on your phone at night, downloading f.lux on your computer, and/or wearing blue light glasses.
