Part 2: 4 Common Skincare Questions, Answered

Try Googling your top skincare questions and you’ll be served hundreds of articles from a variety of sources (some reputable, many not) that you’ll have to sort through to find the information you need. To help simplify your search, we called in our founder, Nancy, to answer four of your most common Qs to help you level up your skincare game.

  1. Why is my skin so dry?

There are a variety of reasons your skin may be dry — your cleanser could be zapping it of its natural moisture, your serum and moisturizer may not be hydrating enough for your skin type (or the weather around you), your pH could be imbalanced, and so on. Regardless of the reason, though, the ultimate way to refresh and replenish a dry, dull complexion is to invest in products that are rich in ultra-hydrating ingredients (think hyaluronic acid, vegetable collagen, polyglutamic acid, and squalane). Reflekt’s simple yet effective four-step regimen features powerful hydrators in every step, including the cleanser, to help you maintain healthy, balanced, and quenched skin year-round.

  1. Can stress cause acne?

As if stress wasn’t nerve-racking enough, knowing it can be the culprit of your skin concerns only worsens the deal. Unfortunately, it’s true and, put most simply, it’s because our body responds by producing extra stress hormones, including cortisol. An overproduction of this hormone can compromise your skin barrier, which can ultimately contribute to a variety of skin concerns like breakouts, dryness, visible signs of aging, sensitivity, and even rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and other skin conditions. Fortunately, you can help avoid triggering your body’s stress response by regularly practicing self-care, exercising, eating a balanced diet, and getting ample sleep (sometimes I’m in bed by 8 pm — no 9 pm dinner rez for me!), to name a few. Stress aside, though, try these tips to further prevent, reduce, and calm breakouts.

  1. When should you moisturize your face?

You should be using a moisturizer twice daily without exception. This is true no matter your skin type — yes, even oily because without moisture, your skin would overcompensate by producing more oil. After you cleanse and apply your serum, I recommend incorporating a lightweight yet effective face cream into your routine. Reflekt 3 Power Peptide Sculpting Face Cream is one such option that’s ideal for all skin types to renew dull skin, reinforce elasticity, prevent collagen breakdown, and lock in moisture, morning and night.

  1. Should I wear sunscreen every day?

Though the rule is decidedly that you should wear sunscreen every day, rain or shine, indoors or out, my hot take is that you should only apply it when you’re leaving your home — unless, of course, you spend your time near a window that gets lots of direct sunlight. I say this because, when under your own roof, I believe it’s best to avoid putting any unnecessary chemicals on your face and instead focus on the non-toxic products that’ll hydrate, plump, and brighten your skin. That said, when you go out, whether it’s cloudy, rainy, cold, you name it, you should always wear SPF. This is because even though the sun’s UVB rays (these are the ones that burn you) aren’t strong on said days, its UVA rays (these are the ones that age you) are still out in full force. So if you’re out and about, I recommend you follow the American Academy of Dermatology’s guidelines for sun protection.
